France Telecom unveils multimedia travel album - European News - Brief Article
France Telecom R&D has developed an experimental service dubbed "Memoire de Voyage[R]" that will allow holidaymakers to create a multimedia travel album by using their cellphones to instantly transfer content--consisting of pictures and information on selected tourist sites--to a personal website. They can also add their own content to the site, including audio and video files, photos, etc., and share their personal vacation site with family and friends. The innovative service is being tested this summer with 500 French and English-speaking tourists vacationing in Corsica and the French Riviera. This trial will begin on August 4 in Corsica and continue in September on the French Riviera. A commercial service could be launched in 2004, and extended to other countries.
Around 150 monuments and tourist sites in Corsica have been identified and assigned a code. To automatically transfer information associated with a site visited (description, photos, slide show, etc.) to the website, vacationers just send the code for the site to the "Memoire de Voyage[R]" service using either the interactive voice menu or an SMS text message. They then receive a confirmation message that the data has been transferred to their personal "holiday log" website.
This new service lets people create their own album of vacation highlights on the Web and share it in real time with friends and family thanks to a password.
This new service targets the millions of tourists who visit Europe's most popular holiday destination cities. Europe represents 60 percent of the world travel market and France is the world's number one tourist destination, welcoming 76.5 million foreign visitors in 2001
