Mikki TaylorBEAUTY DIRECTOR MIKKI TAYLOR SHARES HER TIPS ON SUMMER TRAVEL
With a profession that has me on the road nearly two weeks each month, I've learned a thing or two about good travel habits--those practices that streamline the process so that I never have to stress over the details. Let's face it: These days we're all moving at such a hectic pace that when some R&R finally does make it onto our calendars, we don't want to waste a minute doing things that detract from our downtime. Whether your summer plans involve an island escape or an appearance at the family reunion, I hope my beauty and restorative tips make the journey as enjoyable as the destination.
Make a checklist. Before I travel, I take a moment to assess everything--the destination, what the weather will be, how I want to look. From there, to be sure I've packed everything, I'm the List Queen, jotting down everything from sunscreen to compact umbrella. That way, if something's missing, I can make a drugstore run for travel-size versions of toiletry staples, or pick up refillable plastic containers to create miniatures of my favorite beauty treats.
Pack lightly. My mantra: Keep it simple. Ask yourself, What can I mix and match so I don't overpack? Ideally, you should fit clothes, shoes, lingerie and some toiletries in your bag and still have room for souvenirs. Companies like Chanel, Laura Mercier and Awake make travel kits that store easily in your carry-on or checked baggage. Also watch for gift-with-purchase specials featuring smaller versions of beauty faves. With beauty and grooming products, do think multipurpose to economize on space. I love Donna Karan Formula All-in-One Cleanser, which thoroughly removes even stubborn eye makeup and acts as a toner. Ditto for Mixd Flava's yummy-scented tin of Hair & Body Balm.
Pressurized cabins on airplanes can make body creams and lotions expand, so I prefer to place tubes of these items in resealable bags so I won't find a messy surprise when I unpack. And don't forget essentials such as medications and vitamins that may not be readily available at your destination (which should be packed in your purse or carry-on--never in checked luggage, which can get lost).
Be prepared. Travel is not an exact science, so factor in possible delays or inclement weather. Bring some fruit and bottled water in case you get stuck on the tarmac. It's best to drink lots of water anyway; the airplane environment is dehydrating. And if you're leery of the food on the plane or train, pack a snack.
Don't leave home without it. Even when the objective is getting away from it all, it's important to stay on course. Instead of abandoning your exercise program when you travel, invest in portable pieces--a yoga mat, jump rope or exercise tubing (like those offered in the SPRI Catalog [800] 222-7774)--that let you re-create your workout wherever you are. Remember, this is your moment to relax and unwind, so make the most of it, whether that means bringing along a meditation tape, special mood-altering music, fragrant candles, or a journal to write down thoughts during quiet time. Your summer travel plans are sure to be fun and fulfilling if you add a third "R" to the R&R for rest and relaxation--restoration.
